BEHIND THA BARBED WIRE is not exactly a documentary, at least not yet. The story goes that Scott Whitney, inmate No. U21924, filmed inside Martin Correctional Institution for over four years. He documented life inside one of Florida's most violent and dilapidated prisons. After filming through spy glasses and a hollowed-out Bible with a camera phone peeking through, Whitney managed to smuggle out some of the footage and release it through the Miami Herald. What's available online is only a small percentage of what he's shot, but a full documentary by Whitney may one day come to fruition. David Fathi, director of the ACLU's National Prison Project, stated, "This would be, to my knowledge, the first prison documentary filmed exclusively by a prisoner with a cellphone." Perhaps one day we'll get the full-length feature film.
